Class Description

In this course, students will learn about inner healing through a transformative change lens. Moving beyond the commodified discourse of “self-care,” this course is concerned with healing the wounds of what bell hooks calls “imperialist-white supremacist-capitalist-patriarchy.” Offering resources and inquiries for those who want to understand the whole self, i.e., bio-psycho-social-ecological-spiritual, this course offers change makers an opportunity to embody the journey of healing justice with mindfulness and compassion. The course focuses on the personal, interpersonal, and structural conditions necessary to promote healing in organizations and social movement spaces. A supportive, trauma-informed online learning community will be co-created amongst instructor and students in order to hold space for transformative learning.

Loretta Bio

Loretta’s sensibility about transformative justice was formed during her time working in a women's collective at a community-based domestic violence program in Lawrence, Kansas. In addition to work in feminist movements, she has focused on racial justice, workplace justice, and disaster resilience. She came to body-mind-spirit practices in 1999, after becoming burnt out from her social services and social change work. Loretta’s integrative journey draws from her years of training in Buddhist meditation practices including zen, dzogchen, and vipassana. She completed her 200-hour yoga teacher training with Lauren Toolin at Heartspace Yoga and Healing Arts in Albany, New York and her 500-hour yoga training at Kripalu School of Yoga in Stockbridge, Massachusetts.  She continues her study with teachers from Buddhist, yogic, non-dual, and shamanic traditions.
