The late James Hal Cone was the founder of black theology and a graduate of Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary and Northwestern University. Fifty years after the publication of his seminal text Black Theology & Black Power, the university will host a gathering, Nov. 1-2, 2019 to examine Cone’s corpus within the humanities and black critical thought.
Participants will examine Cone’s metanoia that liberation is the meaning and blackness is the mode of the enslaved who claim to speak of God. Globally recognized keynote speakers, along with scholars in religion, theology, black diaspora studies, political science, history, literature, gender and sexuality studies, along with artists will share the impact of Cone’s work on the world.
