Resipiscence: A Lenten Devotional for Dismantling White Supremacy started in late 2017 as a small project of two heartbeats with a passion for faith and justice.
What actually happened was an amazing publication and podcast series that intentionally centered and amplified voices directly impacted by white supremacy and violence against black and brown bodies. We were honored to be featured by the Samuel Dewitt Proctor Conference, as well as used in may seminaries and institutions of higher learning around the country.
Resipiscence is defined by Merriam-Webster as "a change of mind or heart, reformation, a return to a sane, sound, or corrected view or position.”
Each reflection is calling for a change of both mind and heart in the way we love or do not love our neighbor, a reform in in oppressive structural institutions, and in light of our national political tone, a resolute call for a return to a corrected view of what and who made, makes, and will make this country great.
This is your invitation to sound such a clarion call!!!
What do you do?
1. Choose one of the scriptures from any week of Lent, including Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, and Good Friday as well as all the Sundays of the Lenten season.
The revised common lectionary for Lent in Year C can be found here: https://lectionary.library.vanderbilt.edu/lections.php?year=C&season=Lent.
2. You can write on any one of the scriptures with an eye toward what they have to say about dismantling white supremacy and ending racism and xenophobia. A connection can be made between the pushback and violence Jesus experienced in His time and the silencing of and violence against people of color currently. Feel free to speak from your personal narrative and lived experience.
3. Your piece can be up to 750 words in the form of a Biblical reflection, poem, short story, dialogue, rant, essay, manifesto—whatever form works for you.
4. Include a bio between 50 to 75 words, plus a list of your social media platforms/handles.
5. Clearly indicate the scripture you are focusing on and the date for which it appears in the lectionary.
6. Email your submission to resipiscencenow@gmail.com
Feel free to submit before the 30th!
We will notify you by late December if your piece has been accepted and sent into the editing process.
The Lenten Workbook will also include liturgy templates that faith communities can use in their worship services, as well as some introductory material, a couple questions for each week, and a suggested activity or practice, which we will be creating. Please comment or email us if you would like to contribute in one of these areas.
We will podcast again this year! Daily!!! And will have Resipiscence services weekly at Clayborn Temple in Memphis TN that will be livestreamed over social media for maximum exposure and impact.
Take a moment and think about who in your network should be invited to submit? Keep in mind that we especially want to hear from people of color, women, and queer and transgender folks. Please forward this to anyone you know who has something important to say about scripture and white supremacy.
